Highlands to Cashiers in North Carolina
In the mid-1800s, the development of the railroad brought increased tourism into Highlands to Cashier in North Carolina. Visitors were drawn to the cool mountain climate and stunning scenery. The town of Highlands was officially incorporated in 1875, with Cashiers following suit in 1921. Over the years, the area has continued to grow and evolve, with many of the original buildings and landmarks still standing as a testament to the region’s rich history.
So is it cash-ears or Cash-urs
Everyone seems to have a different story about this area, and they are all pretty fun and full of folklore. A lot of the stories about a prized bull or donkey have been factually discounted. Most do agree though that it is pronounced Cash-urs.
Want to know the real story? The first post office was established in 1839 by Jonathan Zachary, who named the area “Casher’s Valley” after his brother, Alexander Zachary. Alexander built his home and store further along the trail, where he also provided banking services.
This quickly became a popular spot for miners to exchange their gold for cash or trade it for supplies. It was common for them to say, “Let’s go to the Casher’s to trade some of our nuggets for some coffee.” The word “Cashier” was picked up by Jonathan, who then named the post office “Cashiers Valley.”

You’re heading to a rainforest, so you better take a jacket. That statement seems so peculiar to me as it’s in North Carolina but it’s true! Good news though- October and November tend to be the driest months so you shouldn’t experience the typical rain that pours during the summer almost every afternoon. This region is known for its beautiful natural scenery, including the stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains and the vast Nantahala National Forest.
In the fall, the leaves of the trees in Highlands to Cashiers in North Carolina turn a vibrant combination of red, orange, and gold, creating a breathtaking kaleidoscope of colors that is a sight to behold. You can take scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway or hike through the mountains to fully appreciate the beauty of this area.
In addition to the natural beauty, the area offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, including shopping, dining, and cultural events. You can explore charming small towns, visit local art galleries, and sample delicious cuisine made from locally-sourced ingredients.

Getting Around Town
Planes, Trains + Automobiles
You are going to need a car. Whether you rent one, or you are driving into town a car is a must for this area. Even though Cashiers and Highlands are relatively close, you’ll be driving through winding mountains that can take some time. If you’re visiting from afar, more than likely you’ll be flying into either Atlanta or Asheville. Atlanta is about 130 miles south of the area. Whereas Asheville is 70 miles northeast.
If you’ll be heading into the area in the winter, you’ll want to get a car with four wheel drive. Especially if you will be hiking! There are plenty of places to drive to and while it make take 15 minutes to get to, the drives are always worth it. Thanks to beautiful scenic roads and fall leaves in full glory.

Take a day while you’re visiting to relax at some of the best spas in North Carolina. I like to get a facial while traveling and ask for extra hydration. This helps to combat skin fatigue.

My favorite shopping in Cashiers and highlands
Let’s talk shopping! There is plenty of that in this area. Everything from antiques to boutiques that are full of luxury pieces. Antique stores are a wonderful spot to find the perfect unique gift for a friend. Rusticks is mostly interiors, but they have lovely seasonal gifts for tabletops and linens. Meanwhile, Mirror Lake Antiques has oyster plates that make exquisite gifts, too. If you stop by The Village Hound, you will find a shop of Southern Charm with additional artwork and pieces dedicated to the furry friends we love so much. Shop for yourself and pick up designer clothes or accessories at Rosenthals. The other spot to always visit in Highlands is CK Swan. They’ve got a collection of art, jewelry and ocassionally feature trunk shows.
Must See Art In Cashiers and Highlands, North Carolina
While I love shopping, I’d actually always choose going to a museum or some other exhibit specific to a local area. There is so much to learn pout there and art to see. If you find yourself in Highlands, NC head to The Bascom. They put on incredible exhibits for different artists. Often, there are live demonstrations from the artists as well as classes that you can take while visiting. Places like this are a treat and I’d strongly encourage you to stop by!
